Making the Most Out of Your Summer Post COVID-19

 In Uncategorized

Your granddaughter’s dance recital is canceled, your weekly lunches with your church friends are postponed. Those casual chats with your neighbor as you collect your garbage cans are now a threat to your health. Your weekly errands to pick up milk and dry cleaning are taboo. COVID-19 has taken away barbershop visits and dinner dates, Sunday sermons and walks in the park, high school proms and graduations, Easter dinner and Passover Seder. It’s forced people to sit with uneasy thoughts and contemplate their financial future. But if there’s one silver lining to this whole pandemic, it’s that we’ve been taught how not to take these little things in life for granted.

In the near future, when COVID-19 becomes a distant memory, we will again be able to enjoy the little things life has to offer. In the meantime, we can dream of happier, less threatening times, free of anxiety and uncertainty. Summer has always been a source of sunshine and freedom—a time to kick off your shoes and let down your hair. And summer is fast approaching! So rather than let these dark times cloud your thoughts, let’s look to the light! Although we can’t pinpoint when this pandemic will be over, there’s no harm in planning ahead. Look to summer as your inspiration and start making plans for how summer 2020 will be your best one yet!

Host a quarantine-themed get-together. If there’s one thing most people have missed throughout this pandemic, it’s social interaction. And what better way to kickoff summer and the end of social distancing than with a celebration with friends and family! Ask your guests to bring their favorite dish, one they’ve been honing during their time in quarantine. Decorate your home with fun decorations. Mix-n-match and choose decor from occasions most missed during the pandemic, like birthday banners and Easter eggs, graduation caps and Cinco De Mayo sombreros. Maybe your trip to Hawaii got canceled during the shutdown. Commemorate it by wearing your funkiest Hawaiian shirt and straw hat! The point of your quarantine-themed get-together is to celebrate friends and family, enjoy good food, and make up for all the celebrations, holidays, and vacations most missed during your time in quarantine.

Get outside and explore. You watched as your local government shut down parks and trails, beaches and lakes. You were surprised to find out how many outdoor attractions your area actually had! There’s no better time than summer to do a little exploring. Grab a friend or leash up your pooch and check out some of the soon-to-be-open parks and trails you didn’t know existed. Take advantage of the summer sun and get in some Vitamin D with a day trip to the beach or free those feet of socks and shoes and feel the grass in between your toes at the park. Pack some treats from your favorite bakery or deli that has been closed all this time and enjoy a picnic lunch under the sun.

Create your own restaurant week. You’ve gone months without that local hotspot’s famous brick oven pizza and those fresh oysters from that retro bistro in town. Make your foodie dreams a reality by creating your own restaurant week! Plan a few nights out of the week to venture to some of your most-missed restaurants and scope out a few uncharted locales to dine at for the evening. Dress your best and have fun with it. Try the most unique dish on the menu and don’t forget the dessert!

Freshen up your summer wardrobe. Sweatpants and pajamas were the height of fashion during the quarantine. But once restaurants open up, invitations to BBQs start pouring in, and work resumes, those yoga pants and old t-shirts just won’t cut it. Venture to the mall or your favorite boutique for a much-needed pop of color to your wardrobe after those dreary days. Think ahead to the fun day trips and vacations you have planned and choose outfits perfect for your holiday in the sun. COVID-19 took a toll on everyone, but you pushed through it so treat yourself! Shop around and buy something unique and different as your end-of-quarantine gift to yourself.

Book a trip. Now that your summer wardrobe is ready to go and, by now, you’ve gotten your haircut, you’re ready for that vacation that COVID canceled. Touch base with your travel agent, airline, and accommodations to be sure your reservations are still secured and ready to be used. Don’t have a vacation waiting for you? Start doing some research. Once COVID is out of the way the sky’s the limit! Even if your vacation destination is just a car ride away, grab your Hawaiian shirt and flip flops and use the holiday to sit back and relax, clear your mind, and explore all the exciting places you’ve only just dreamed about during your time in quarantine.

One day the Corona Virus will be just another chapter in the history books. Masks will come off, stores will reopen, families will be reunited, and people will no longer be classified as essential or nonessential. For now, look to the brighter days ahead. Use the summer season as your hope and inspiration and start planning for all the good times to come.
